Chapter 1. The concept of slang and the problem of its translation.
Chapter 2. Comparative analysis (Helen Fielding. Bridget Jones’s Diary)

Adequacy of translation/interpretation is always very important, the role of translator/interpreter as the main participant of the translation/interpretation process should not be underestimated. International community needs adequate and equivalent texts – that are results of the translation/interpretation process
This term paper deals with the problem of translating obscene vocabulary, the problem that is not much studied yet but which is important especially at present time due to wide usage of obscene vocabulary in modern literature.
At present the mission of the translator is not only to provide good translation according to standard requirements but also to reflect cultural and mental features of the original language.
One of the problems on the way to attain the adequacy of the translation is the translation of obscene language which became widely used in modern literature (less in mass media) for the last decades. Obscene language is characterized by very idiomatical and very expressive functions. . Obscene language can be referred to as slang variation. Modern literature is flooded with these slang words used by both uneducated and educated people. Though there is no consensus on the limit of this vocabulary usage or whether this vocabulary should be used at all, the problem of adequacy of translation still exists and it is important to study this problem, because not much attention had been paid to this problem lately. The aim of this term paper is to study peculiarities of translation of obscene vocabulary from the published modern fiction.
The following objectives are set to achieve the aim of the work:
1) to identify the notion of slang
2) to identify the methods for translation of slang.
The study was based upon the famous novel “Bridget Jones’s Diary” by Helen Fielding translated into Russian by A. Moskvichova. ( Хелен Филдинг. Дневник Бриджит Джонс. М.: Легеос. – 2005г. – 233с.) The author used the method of comparative analysis for identifying the ways of translation from the English -source language into the Russian - target language. . This method applies comparison and confrontation of units of the source language with the same units of the target language.

The concept of slang includes informal, nonstandard words, phrases , expressions and meanings that generally live shorter life than the expressions of ordinary colloquial speech, and typically are formed by creative, often witty juxtapositions of words or images.
Slang is related to social dialects. A dialect is a variety of a language that is characteristic of a particular group of the languages speakers. The term is applied most often to regional speech patterns, but a dialect may also be defined by other factors, such as social class. The dialect is always the opposite of standart language.
Slang takes a special position among social dialects in the English language. Different lexical and linguistic phenomena often refer to the notion of slang. So there are too many different conceptions of slang and the notion of slang is too wide. But some linguists suggest to refer to slang all voabulary that isn’t related to Royal English. An interesting fact about the word slang is that it was originally a slang term for the old French phrase "sale langue", which translated into English mean "dirty language".
Slang can be contrasted with jargon (technical language of occupational or other groups) and with argot or cant (secret vocabulary of underworld groups), but the borderlines separating these categories from slang are greatly blurred, and some writers use the terms cant, argot, and jargon in a general way to include all the foregoing meanings.
Slang is vocabulary that is meant to be interpreted quickly but not necessarily literally, as slang words or terms are often a metaphor or an allegory. Slang is usually very emotionally coloured. With its unusual semantic richness, with its remarkable variety of associations, with its great emotion-enfluenced power and its comparative simplicity for understanding slang is an effective method for a person to show his individuality, to express his thoughts and feelings in different situations.
Slang terms are frequently particular to a certain subculture, such as musicians, and members of minority groups. Nevertheless, usage of slang expressions can spread outside their original areas to become commonly used, such as "cool". While some words eventually lose their status as slang, others continue to be considered as such by most speakers. In spite of this, the process tends to lead the original users to replace the words with other, less-recognized terms to maintain group identity.
One use of slang is to circumvent social taboos, as mainstream language tends to shy away from evoking certain realities. For this reason, slang vocabularies are particularly rich in certain domains, such as sexuality, violence, crime and drugs. Alternatively, slang can grow out of mere familiarity with the things described.
Even within a single language community, slang tends to vary widely across social, ethnic, economic, and geographic strata. Slang sometimes grows more and more common until it becomes the dominant way of saying something, at which time it is regarded as mainstream, acceptable language, while at other times it may fall into disuse. Numerous slang terms pass into informal mainstream speech, and sometimes into formal speech, though this may involve a change in meaning or usage.
Slang very often involves the creation of novel meanings for existing words. It is very common for such novel meanings to diverge significantly from the standard meaning. Thus, "cool" and "hot" can both mean "very good", "impressive" or "good looking".
Slang terms are often known only within a clique or ingroup. Another type of slang, with roots in Internet culture, is texting language (txt or chatspeak), which is widely used in instant messaging on the Internet (AOL speak) and mobile phones (SMS language).
There is the number of the most significant and distinguishing features of slang such as:
1) Slang is a lexical phenomenon.
2) Slang cannot belong to the literary language.
3) Slang is a layer of vocabulary that is typical for the oral speech.
4) Slang is vocabuary that is ...
