The cloak-room attendant invited the next person. William exclaimed that he couldn’t find his ticket. The attendant said that he couldn’t let him have his things without his ticket. He asked whether William had looked everywhere. He asked whether he had dropped the ticket by the seat. The usherette offered her help (asked whether she could help him). William admitted that he had lost his cloak-room ticket. He asked whether he could go back to his seat because he though that he had dropped it there. The usherette wanted to know what his seat number had been. William answered that it had been row J, seat №26. He added that it was too dark to see properly and asked her to shine her torch along that row.
(Back in the cloak-room.)
The attendant wondered whether William had found his ticket. William answered that he still couldn’t find it. He asked the attendant whether he could describe his things to him. Attendant said that he would ask the manager whether he would let William have them if he told the attendant what they were like. William said that it had been a grey raincoat with a pair of gloves in the pocket. The attendant said that they had had about a hundred things answering to that description that day. He wanted to know what colour the gloves had been. William answered that they had been gray with black piping. The attendant consulted with the manager, came up to William and said that the manager had told that he could have his things. He gave the things back to William. William thanked the attendant and wished him good evening.

1. A demand for food service has grown at a very rapid pace in recent years. In today’s world, even children are patronizing food service establishments at very early ages – having their “happy meals” at McDonald’s – then continuing to patronize McDonald’s and restaurants in general in their adult years. Today, many adults eat out several times each week – more than ever before. Studies in many countries have shown that a big part of money spent on food is spent in food service establishments. In addition, the frequency of eating out is increasing. People in developed countries are consuming more meals away from home each year, and food service sales continue to increase in many countries. Several reasons are commonly cited for increased demand for food service. They include: 1. increased discretionary income; 2. smaller families; 3. changing lifestyle.
2. People have more discretionary income than before. Individuals have more money to spend as they choose, and growing numbers are spending a substantial amount of it in food service establishments. For example, for most Americans today, having a meal or a snack in a restaurant or other food service establishments is an unremarkable, everyday occurrence. Another reason that people patronize food service establishments more frequently is a decrease in the size of the family. One explanation for this is that more women are in the work force and are choosing to postpone having children. In fact, many are choosing to have fewer children altogether. People are tired at the end of the day, and going to eat or having a meal delivered has become an acceptable alternative to preparing the evening meal at home. And it is probably easier to go out with a small family than with a large one.
3. The daily routines of families are very different from what they were some years ago. People in developed countries are less inclined to prepare evening meals. In most of the countries both parents work. The term two-earner household implies that one individual no longer stays at home all day to take primary responsibility for food shopping, meal preparation, and cleaning up after a meal. Another change in lifestyle that affects the food service industry is that neither young people attending school nor working adults are carrying their lunches from home as they did in the years past. Students and workers have food readily available at school, at work, or at any of fast food establishments. Similarly, each individual in today’s family has a greater degree of independence than in the past. Each makes more personal decisions about his or her life than before. And more family members have automobiles and can, for example, easily to decide to go to a food service establishment for a meal with friends rather than have the meal at home. In some households, it is difficult to identify an evening time period at all as family members may come home at different times and either prepare their own meal or elect to go to a restaurant to eat. At the same time, the increase in number of wage earners in many countries has led to a decrease in the number of family members trained in the art and science of food preparation. In many households, there is no longer anyone able to prepare an excellent meal. Thus, for holiday meals and other occasions for celebrations, many are depending on restaurants. Much of the enjoyment in travel comes from dining out. Many people consider food away from home not only as a convenience, but as a pleasurable leisure time activity.
